Ice cream, just the words can allude to a smile, everybody has a favourite flavour, from your Nan to your Nipper. Here on the Isle of Wight, we are producing some corkers for you to try this summer. So, to celebrate the combination of July being National Ice Cream Month and the upcoming National Ice Cream Day on 20th July. We’ve put together a guide to some of the best places for ice cream across the Isle of Wight.
Minghella has been making the Isle of Wight’s most loved and celebrated ice creams and sorbets for over 70 years and has won over 80 Great Taste Awards. Sticklers when it comes to choosing the ingredients, only the finest will do. There is such an extensive range to try, including all the classics plus some intriguingly named flavours to try. Such as Honeymoon Dream, Seaspray Salty Caramel or Black Garlic, there’s definitely something to tickle the taste buds.
The Isle of Wight Ice Cream Co. is headed up by two born and bred ‘Caulkheads’. Bringing a wealth of experience in farming, food production and food distribution. The ice cream is made right in the centre of the Island at their factory in Newport, using Isle of Wight milk and cream, it truly is a local product. Crave is a gorgeous little ice cream parlour on Spring Hill in Ventnor. The premises are so charming, it has a real ‘yesteryear’ feel to it, with all the old Victorian tiles still intact. All of the ice creams at Crave are made on the premises with flavours changing daily, with yummy-sounding flavours like caramel stroopwafel, blueberry pie and rhubarb crumble. No one is left out, there are gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options available too.
Calbourne Classics is based on Three Gates Farm, close to the sea in Shalfleet. For over 30 years they’ve been making delicious ice cream, sponge and fruit cakes, scones, cheesecakes, yoghurts, plus a delicious gluten-free and vegan range. However, the award-winning clotted cream ice cream really is the signature product to try. Indulge in their range of flavours, including Orange & Grand Marnier, Black Cherry and Apple Streusel.
After a stroll along Shanklin seafront, pop into Toppings Ice Cream which offers over 40 flavours of ice cream. You’ll also find milkshakes, sundaes, waffles, hand-cut fudge, pick-n-mix and even ice cream for dogs. One of the most popular offerings is the pink and white whippy – the perfect swirl of strawberry and vanilla ice cream which can be topped with flakes, sauces and toppings.
If you find yourself in the historic harbour town of Yarmouth and craving a refreshing treat, make your way to Scoops on Wheatsheaf Lane. This specialist ice cream parlour welcomes families and their furry friends 7 days a week. Indulge in the widest range of locally sourced ice cream in the West Wight, and if you’re having trouble choosing, they offer free tasters to help you decide!
Beginning life in March 2018, Paradice Ice Cream Parlour (formerly The Plaza) is the go-to spot for ice cream in Cowes. They also offer vegan ice creams, ice cream milkshakes, Belgian waffles, sundaes, hot brioche ice cream baps and hot cookie dough. Located just a short distance from Paradice is Cowes Esplanade, where you can relax on the sea wall, watching the boats pass by as you indulge in your favourite ice cream treat.
The Garlic Farm, located in Newchurch, has plenty to explore and taste in their well-stocked farm shop. They serve the classics from Minghella, made from Isle of Wight milk and cream. However, if you’re feeling adventurous, why not give their Black Garlic & Chocolate Ice Cream a try? The sweet black garlic with notes of caramel complements rich chocolate, creating a surprisingly tasty treat.
Located in Gurnard, Gurnard Press Bistro is a cheerful and cosy bistro where you can relax and enjoy a wide range of tasty dishes, all made with the finest ingredients. Starting from May, they’ve begun serving ice cream from local producer, The Isle of Wight Ice Cream Co. Just a short walk from the beach, it’s an ideal place to take a break during a sunny seaside walk or to grab a sweet treat after your meal.
Set overlooking the Solent and the mainland, at the entrance to Yarmouth’s historic wooden pier, you’ll find The Gossips Café. Established in 1992, this family-run, fully licensed café and ice cream parlour is the perfect spot to grab some lunch, a drink, or an ice cream while taking in the view of the boats. They serve Isle of Wight ice cream, plus Aubree strawberry sweet treats, hot Belgian waffles, sundaes, plant-based tubs, and sorbet.
The Plaza Ices offers Kelly’s of Cornwall, Whippy Ice Cream, and a variety of lollies from Cadbury’s, Del Monte and Rowntrees at various spots across the Island. Their eco-friendly modern ice cream vans can often be found on Prince’s Esplanade in Gurnard. You’ll also sometimes find them at St James’ Square, Compton Bay, schools, businesses and Island events.
