As we near mulled wine season, how do you feel about mulled cider? 18th November marks Apple Cider Day and we have a few local Isle of Wight brews that hit the spot at any time of year… chilled or warmed and spiced up.

Grazed Knee Cider

Creating delicious crafted cider for their very own orchard, Grazed Knee Cider has planted a collection of local Island apple varieties including Isle of Wight Pippin, Sir John Thorneycroft, the massive Howgate Wonder, Bembridge Beauty and Little Pax.

The team blends together juice from the apples they grow to provide the best mix of acidity and tannins for good fermentation in small batches in the cool conditions of their very own cave! When the time is right (and not before) the cider is bottled and ready for you to enjoy, available at various farm shops and local shops across the Island. Goddards Brewery, Arreton

The Isle of Wight’s longest established brewery, Goddards Brewery, have dipped their toe into the world of cider with their Barnsley Farmhouse cider. Available (only at the moment) on tap at their Firkin Deck Restaurant and Bar.

Sip into something a little fruitier than their usual ales, it’s a 4.7% medium/dry cider. Made from 100% locally sourced apple juice, it has been fermented in oak barrels giving it a slightly oaky/vanilla finish. Go one give it a go!

Godshill Cider Barn, Godshill

The Godshill Cider Barn is under new management and reopened its doors on 31st March.

Selling local cider as well as craft bottled cider, local wines, beers and spirits. Bursting with lots of other great Island produce too, including; locally baked bread, dairy and deli items as well as lots of other tasty goodies. Pop in and see the new owners, have a chat and pick up so scrumpy!

Ingredients

  • litres dry cider try Grazed Knee Spell Unker (a still, dry cider, ABV 5.8%)
  • 7 tbsp Calvados
  • 400 ml apple juice
  • 75 g dark brown sugar
  • zest 1 orange pared into strips
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks broken in half
  • 1 tbsp allspice berries

Instructions

  • Pour the cider, Calvados, apple juice and sugar into a large saucepan, and gently heat (do not boil).
  • Add in the orange zest and spices, bring to a simmer, then turn down and keep on a low heat for 20-30 mins. Serve!
